This 1953 MG TD recently caught fire during a leisure drive in the state of Arizona. Luckily no one got hurt, but the car suffered severe damage. We bought it from the insurance company, believing it still has enough potential to be completely restored.

The chassis frame looks all solid and straight and simply needs to be bead blasted and repainted.

The body tub suffered the most. All of the woodwork has burnt and needs to be replaced. Some of the body tub’s sheet metal is warped from the heat and needs to be put back in its original shape.

No rust damage is visible and all of the fenders look to be in good condition.

The interior has simply burnt down completely. Nothing is left of the steering wheel, dashboard, instruments and switches.

The drivetrain appears to have suffered little, but will require at least a thorough check up and a partial rebuild. Matching numbers XPAG TD2 engine with clean engine oil, turns by hand. On top of the gearbox, the aluminium gearshift selector housing is damaged and needs to be replaced. Otherwise, the gearbox and rear axle appear to have had no visual damage from the fire.

A lot of replacement parts are needed to get this car rebuilt. Nevertheless, with parts sourced and the body tub restored, this will be an interesting and straightforward restoration project. For inspiration, check out the restoration of this 1952 MG TD we sold a couple of years ago.
